SPL Laser Hair Removal

Permanently Reducing Hair with SPL

Say goodbye to waxing every few weeks, or shaving every few days.

SPL laser hair removal permanently reduces the amount of hair you have, and some never grow back.

You only need one maintainence session every 6 months, or 2 per year. So no shaving or waxing for at least 6 months basically.

I think it is less painful than waxing. It is so fast. Underarms take less than 5 mins total for the both of them.

It is cheaper in the long run. $75 per session of underarms.

No shaving bumps or itchyness.

How is SPL different to IPL?

Less painful and more effective

How many sessions will I need?

I was told I will need 6 treatments, and that is the standard minimum for most people. So budget and be prepared for 6 sessions. Mine will be 6 sessions.

Some people depending on their skin colour, hair colour, or treatment area, may need up to 8, or even up to 10 treatments on that area. You will be advised about your treatment plan and the factors contributing to it on your first consultation.

The treatments are spaced about 4 - 6 weeks apart. So on average you will need to go back every 5 weeks for each appointment. It is important to stick to the schedule, otherwise the treatment will likely not be as effective. Make sure you budget and save the money for each treatment so that you can go on time.

What happens during the session?

You lay on a bed, like in any doctors surgery or beautician. The area where your hair is being removed will need to be undressed of course.

If it is for a bikini or brazilian area, you are given a loose fitting disposable g-string, which will cover your bits up and likely make you feel a little more comfortable.

The lady will wear gloves during your treatment, and the bed you are laying on has paper towel down on top of it of course.

You will be given protective glasses to wear, although it's a good idea to just close your eyes as well. You most likely will have them closed without even thinking.

A gel is applied to the area like they do for ultrasounds etc. This is what the handheld piece of the laser machine is placed on when you are being zapped.

At the end of the treatment, the gel is wiped off and aloe vera cream is applied to the area.

How much does it cost?

Remember that prices will vary between SPL and IPL, and so make sure you are being quoted for an SPL clinic and not an IPL clinic. Males and females are generally different prices due to thickness and amount of hair.

For females through my chain of clinics, we pay $75 for underarms. (includes them both of course).

Bikini is $75. Brazilian is $135.

The special offer I got was to pay for the bikini or brazilian and get the underarms for only an additional $20.

The price you pay for the first treatment is then locked in for the subsequent treatments, so it's worth getting a special offer before starting.

What does SPL feel like on the skin and is it painful?

I had a test patch done several weeks beforehand so that I could see what the hair did when it regrowed, and also to test whether I could handle the pain. It is not PAINFUL, but as I cannot even handle needles at a doctors or dentist, I knew I would be unable to handle the entire treatment area. Please note this is mainly psychological for me. I have never had a tattoo, body piercings, or even waxed. So if you have done any of them yourself, as nearly all females would have, then it will likely be nothing at all on a pain scale.

When I have seen waxing done in the movies and on TV, to me that looks so painful and unbearable on the person's face, so i think SPL is less painful than waxing.

It is a little heated pinprick which only lasts for that second. Not on every single tiny little hair like possibly feels like with electrolysis. But just one pinprick for the whole area that the spl laser head covers. To me, it felt like the prick was in the middle of that area under the head of the handheld piece, so not all over.

There is no pain afterwards. Just for that brief second of zapping.

Using numbing cream

After doing my test patch, I decided I would using numbing cream.

I bought EMLA cream, without a prescription, in a little 5g tube, for around $15. It is available in 30g tubes for around $90 on order by request.

I bought 3 of the 5g tubes as that's all I could find. One tube will cover both your underarms in a thick layer.

Because I am treating a much larger area, I have asked my chemist to special order me the 30g tubes, as I needed to cover the area thicker next time. They have given me a special price of $69 per tube, since they know I will be buying a few of them. :-) So it may pay that you put in a special request with your chemist too.

Using pain relievers

I took Panadeine Forte which has 30mg of codeine in it, but all i ended up doing was feeling nauseated for the next 15 hours and it made a horrible end to the night. I took too many.

It did nothing for my treatment. It just made me sick for afterwards.

No need for pain relievers. Just numbing cream if you are scared.
